The Ball

Not only was the game developed in Rugby so was the essential piece of equipment - the rugby ball. Much of this development has taken place here on this site for over 160 years.

There were two major contributors to the invention of the rugby football. William Gilbert, who set up business here in 1842 and another local boot and shoemaker Richard Lindon, who invented the india rubber bladder. Between the two of them the rugby football was born.
