What caused William Webb Ellis to pick up the ball and run with it on the Close at Rugby School. Which forms of football preceded his famous exploit ?

The museum illustrates how many players were in the original teams of the 1820’s and how long matches took to play.

The museum also looks at how the game became standardised for the whole world to play.

How the first rugby balls were made?


Why are rugby balls their distinctive oval shape? Understand the materials, skills, & processes required to make not only the original balls, but also how they evolved into the modern rubberised match balls of today.

On display is a wealth of Barbarian artefacts collected from some of the greatest games ever played. They are known throughout the rugby playing world for their maverick style of rugby, and has a heritage richly reflecting the core values of the game – teamwork, skill, camaraderie & sportsmanship.

There are a plethora of domestic and international playing jerseys on display, combined with match day programmes. Plus the Webb Ellis tie wall – is your club/union tie on there?

Dedicated memorabilia showcases for New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Japan are currently on display.

It is suggested 45 minutes to an hour is taken to view all the artefacts in the museum.

Due to its size restriction, we are unable to accommodate school parties, unless a prior arrangement has been made.


There is a retail outlet selling rugby specific gifts such as t-shirts, jerseys, cuff links, glassware, leather balls & spirits – a diverse offering for the rugby enthusiast.
